There’s only a week left until Thanksgiving and the Weld Food Bank is in critical need of turkeys to meet holiday orders. The food bank shares donated turkeys with more than 102 partners, including food pantries and organizations offering thanksgiving dinners. Kevin Mullin, the Weld Food Bank's Director of Development, says so far this month about 500 turkeys have been donated.

“It’s not that the community isn’t being generous it’s just that the need has increased. And so for example in 2010, our agency partners asked us for 2000 turkeys and this year they asked us for 3000 cumulatively. So the need has increased by nearly 50 percent in just that short amount of time.”

Mullin says 1500 turkeys are need for the Thanksgiving holiday and another 1500 for Christmas. Turkey donations can be delivered to the Weld Food Bank before Christmas day.

“We prefer them (turkeys) to be frozen or the feathers get all over the warehouse and we don’t like that. But yes any turkey that can be donated we will appreciate and use.”

The Weld Food Bank will also be collecting turkey donations from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Walmart stores in Greeley, Evans and Firestone, Saturday Nov 17.
