No Butts About It, Enforcement of Boulder’s Pearl Street Smoking Ban Starts

Creative Commons

It’s no April Fool’s joke – enforcement of a smoking ban on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall takes effect on Monday, April 1st.

Citing public health and air quality issues, the smoking ban was approved last December for a four block stretch of the popular pedestrian mall and the Boulder County Courthouse. It went into effect on January 18th, but “no smoking” signs were not posted until last week.

Boulder police have discretion inenforcing the banpreferring to educate first, but a $500.00 fine could be imposed for a first or second offense within a two year period. A $1,000.00 fine and a 90-day jail sentence is possible for a third offense within a two year period.
