Under sunny skies and a light breeze alumni, faculty and current students gathered to celebrate recent renovations to the Aims Community College campus in Greeley on Wednesday. They also celebrated its 45th anniversary.
Local dignitaries attended the event including Democratic state Senator Brandon Shaffer, who’s running to unseat Republican US Congressman Cory Gardner in the 4th District.
School leaders showed off a new promenade through the main campus lined with landscaping and sculptures. And a ribbon cutting opened a new road in honor of Harold and Florence Winograd, Aims supporters.
In a statement, college President Marsi Liddel said the completed projects will enhance the campus for both students and staff.
“The Promenade is much more than a sidewalk connecting buildings. It is an inviting environment lined with benches, study areas, and an outdoor classroom. The Promenade is in response to our students, who wanted more pedestrian-friendly ways to get from one side of the campus to the other.”
Another ribbon cutting took place at the Westview building.
Opened in 1984, the 25 classroom building received new décor, a paint job, and updated room numbering. 16 year old student Peter Haller takes classes in Westview. He says the updated décor is a big improvement, and the promenade is ‘unmatched.’
School officials say renovations to the campus grounds took approximately 3 months to complete with 450,000 cubic feet of new sod planted in just 5 days.
Other improvements include new signage, tennis courts, and an outdoor classroom.
The first day of classes began at Aims Community College on September 27th 1967, with 949 students enrolled. Today the college has three campuses across northern Colorado and offers over 160 degree and certification programs.
