Colorado Schools Win Green Ribbon Awards

U.S. Department of Education

Three Colorado schools have been recognized for their environmental stewardship as part of the first U-S Department of Education’s list of Green Ribbon Schools. In the Poudre School District, Wellington Middle School was among 78 schools awarded in 29 states nationally.

Bill Peisner, the school’s counselor says Wellington Middle is one of six schools in Colorado that have a wind turbine on campus.

“It is more of an educational piece. The Department of Energy has realized that there are not enough kids that are knowledgeable about alternative energy and the goal is to have more kids grow up with alternative energy in their school,” Peisner says.

Peisner says about 1% of the school’s energy is generated by the turbine. The other two Colorado schools awarded for the sustainability programs and education are the Denver Green School and Colorado Flagstone Elementary in Castle Rock.
