Rainfall Prompts Easing of Some Fire Restrictions

Recent rainfall along the Front Range and central mountains has reduced the fire danger enough that U.S. Forest Service officials are lifting Stage 1 fire restrictions in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and for the Pawnee National Grassland. That includes some of the forests burned by the High Park fire.

Forest Service spokesperson Tammy Williams says the restrictions aren’t warranted anymore, given the recent moisture.

“However, conditions can change quickly in Colorado or in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests,” she adds. “So we want to make sure that people still take every precaution with any fire that they have, and really make sure their campfires are completely out before they leave them.”

Related restrictions on firearms are also being eased. But Williams says recreational shooters need to check for local closures and target restrictions that may still be in place.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
