The Soldier Canyon Fire continues to burn near Horsetooth Reservoir and Northern Water is monitoring the blaze in case it moves closer to the water’s edge.

Dana Strongin says while Northern Water isn’t a first responder for fires, they do remain on alert. “The fact that it’s near our facilities or reservoir means that we’re there to monitor it, see if there’s any future potential water quality issues,” said Strongin.
“When it comes down to an emergency like a fire, we definitely put consideration into helping that, especially when it’s near structures.” Strongin says the agency is ready to assist firefighters with water suppression needs, despite current low water levels at Horsetooth.
The canyon where the fire is burning is considered a drainage source into the reservoir, and it’s also very near an area burned by last year’s High Park Fire.
Strongin says Northern Water has been working to re-seed and mulch the damaged area scorched by the High Park Fire to prevent erosion. In addition, a temporary dam was constructed in the canyon that will help prevent future sediment or debris runoff from flowing into the reservoir.
