From Neil Best's Desk: The Music Scene In Our Own Backyard
Colorado has developed quite the national reputation as a flourishing innovation center. Boulder and Fort Collins were both ranked in the top 10 in a recent list of America's Most Innovative Tech Hubs, above better-known tech centers like Austin and Boston.
Colorado is also catching up to Austin in another area, with a growing reputation as a local music center.
Governor Hickenlooper is fond of pointing out that Denver has more live music venues than Austin, and thanks to the local nonprofit Spokesbuzz, Northern Colorado has been raising Fort Collins' profile on the national scene. Many think that Colorado's thriving music scene is a major contributing factor in the state's ability to attract and retain tech talent.
Since 2010, Spokesbuzz has been bringing Colorado bands to South By Southwest, the largest music festival of its kind in the world. Thousands of bands and performers come from around the world to showcase before music industry heavy hitters from record companies, concert promoters, managers and others in hopes of advancing their career beyond their local scene.
In 2015, the Colorado Music Party will feature more than 120 Colorado bands -- the state's largest presence at the festival yet. KUNC is proud to be a sponsor of the showcase, and reporter Stacy Nick will be filing reports from Austin to give listeners a taste of what it means to the bands that are participating. In addition to Stacy's stories, you'll be hearing many of those bands during KUNC Music, as we help you discover great music that's happening right in our backyard.
