From Neil Best's Desk: Guns & America Collaboration

KUNC Pres. Neil Best

Dear Friends,

Our commitment to be a valued and trusted news resource for you is on-going for all of us at KUNC.  With that goal in mind we have accepted the challenge and opportunity to participate in Guns & America, a national collaboration with nine other public radio stations.

Organized by WAMU in Washington D.C. the collaboration will launch the Audion Fellowship, a first-of-its kind program that will train and empower a diverse corps of innovative, cross-platform journalists to cover difficult and divisive topics.

As our friend and colleague, JJ Yore, General Manager at WAMU says, “The Guns & America national coverage initiative will focus the power of public media on one of the most important-and polarizing-issues in our nation.  The collaborative will take a fresh approach to the topic of guns, exploring divergent views, highlighting solutions to gun violence, and stimulating new conversations about one of the intractable issues of our time.”

The complexity of the role of guns in American society is not lost on us.  We are confident that under the leadership of JJ and the team at WAMU, along with our colleagues around the country this reporting will encourage thoughtful consideration of this very difficult topic.

The Guns & America national reporting collaborative will be headquartered and supported by a five-person production team at WAMU in Washington, D.C. and ten Audion Fellowship reporters to be placed at public newsrooms across the county.  In addition to the KUNC news room reporters will be at Boise Public Radio in Boise, Idaho; KCUR in Kansas City, Missouri; KERA in Dallas, Texas; Oregon Public Broadcasting in Portland, Oregon; WABE in Atlanta, Georgia; WAMU in Washington, D.C.; Ideastream in Cleveland, Ohio; WNPR in Hartford, Connecticut; and WUNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

We are very proud and pleased to be able to participate in what will certainly be a ground-breaking project for public media.  In the months ahead we will look forward to your feedback as you hear the reporting from Guns & America.

Sincerely,

Neil Best
