Get Involved: Children's Speech and Reading Center
When a child has difficulty expressing themselves or discerning information it impacts not only developmental and academic skills but social skills as well. The Children’s Speech and Reading Center (CSRC) is a nonprofit in Fort Collins has been helping children thrive for the past 25 years.
“The children speech and reading center is northern Colorado's premier clinic specializing in childhood speech language and reading development,” said office manager Laura Decatur. “We provide funding on a sliding scale so that all families are able to receive services regardless of income level.”
CSRC’s mission is simple: They want to enable children with speech-language and reading difficulties to communicate clearly and effectively so that they can reach their full potential. CSRC provides free screenings and affordable treatment services for Northern Colorado children in order to help them develop communication skills.
“It’s huge seeing a kid who didn’t have any confidence, who was scared to talk out loud because of making mistakes, be able to be comfortable in front of friends and adults,” said parent Signe Revielle. “I don’t even know how to put it in to words.”
CSRC is a valuable tool for low income families, with 75% of their clients qualifying for reduced fee services. Last year they provided more than 200 free screenings in their clinic and in Fort Collins and Loveland pre-schools, and 4,632 speech-language-reading and pre-literacy therapy sessions to 281 children.
CSRC often needs volunteers for events and for projects throughout the year. This summer they will be creating alphabet cards for local preschools.
