Due out May 27 along with the rest of Sharon VanEtten's latest album, Are We There?, "Taking Chances" has an R&B tinge mixed in with the haunting vocal you've come to expect. NPR's All Songs Considered digs the song's "fat Hofner bass, electric guitar and strange electronics." It's something different than her earlier acoustic work.

Sharp-eyed viewers may note the video for "Taking Chances" is an homage to the Agnes Varda film Cleo From 5 to 7 - though I didn't catch that. Over at Stereogum the director of the video, Michael Palmieri, said that the film leapt immediately to mind when he heard Van Etten's lyrics for the song.
