We Made It: Happy Election Day

Today is finally the day. The day where ‘hurry up and wait’ is the mantra while the polls are open for the electorate. Today we find out which candidate will secure the presidency.

Update 4:00 p.m.: Our live blog for Election Night has moved to this post. Please join us there for updates.

Update 1:09 p.m.: As of 12:10 p.m., numbers released by the Secretary of State indicate that 1,943,630 votes have been cast in Colorado. 698,620 votes have been cast by registered Republicans, 663,282 by registered Democrats, and 560,512 by unaffiliated voters. Remember, these are vote counts by affiliation, not actual tallied votes for either candidate.

Update 7:44 a.m.: Polls are open. We're following the Colorado vote with a Storify this morning. If you've voted tweet us @KUNC or use the hashtag #covote. You can follow along as well at this post.

Polls in Colorado are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST. If you weren’t among the nearly 1.6 million that had voted by the close of early voting you will have to head to the polls today. Make sure you have what you need for a smooth voting experience.

As for prognostication on the eventual winner of the election, at this point, it’s anyone’s guess. Public Policy Polling found that Obama leads Romney 52-to-46, the Real Clear Politics Average in Colorado shows Obama by 1.5, and the Five Thirty Eight blog is projecting Obama by +1.3 in the polling average. If you’re looking for a little more on the polling front, the Five Thirty Eight has an interesting read on the state and national polls more closely aligning, with a look at the polls including a change from the post-Denver debate polls.

The only thing certain is that polls will open and they will close, with results starting to come in from there. Here’s the schedule of poll closures that will wash over the country tonight, listed in both Mountain and Eastern Time:

  • 5 p.m. (7 p.m. EST)
Georiga, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia

Live coverage of the election from NPR will be streaming all day here at KUNC.org, simply click the ‘Live Election Coverage’ button on the home page. We’ll also be live blogging the election tonight starting just before 4 p.m. with updates throughout the evening both from NPR and from our reporters. In deference to Colorado’s status as a battleground state this year, we’ll also be joining with other fellow NPR Member stations in live blogging the election from the point-of-view of the states viewed as toss-ups as well.

I’m not a Colorado native (did you know that "I'm from Missouri" means "I'm skeptical of the matter and not easily convinced?") but I have lived here for most of my life and couldn't imagine leaving. After graduating from Colorado State University, I did what everyone wants to do; I moved to the mountains and skied, hiked, and hid from responsibility! Our listeners in the mountains may know me from my time in Steamboat Springs and Vail or as the voice of the Battle Mountain Huskies Hockey team in Vail.
