Colorado Municipal Airports to Receive $11 Million

Creative Commons

Colorado’s municipal airports will receive just over $11 million for improvements from the state.

The grants range from $4,000.00 for the airport in Yuma to $400,000.00 to Rifle. Stacey Stegman is spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Transportation, which collects money from fuel taxes and administers the Aviation Discretionary Grant program. She says the money will help airports improve things like lighting, and some things that most people wouldn’t realize.

“…like peripheral improvements such as wildlife fencing to keep wildlife out from connecting to the airport area and runways,” she said.

22 of the 46 projects will be leveraged with both federal and local funds, which brings the total to $94 million allocated toward repairs. Some airport grant recipients like Eagle and Aspen on the western slope are important hubs for passenger travel, while others are more important for transporting goods.
