ACCESS housing is a nonprofit in Commerce City founded in 1983. Over the last four years board president Ken Hayes and executive director Megan Vizina have created a growing community that gives people a sturdy stepping stone to transition out of homelessness.
“ACCESS Housing is a shelter and a community resource,” said Vizina. “We work with families experiencing homelessness to transition to having a home.”
Walking through the office at ACCESS Housing, it was like a labyrinth of assistance. From rooms filled with community cleaning supplies to others that were filled with useful items like pots, pans, sheets and towels, ACCESS is doing everything in their power to make sure the families coming in have the resources to improve their living situation.
This includes their resource room which has supplies to help people find jobs, childcare and other needs, as well as giving people the ability to create resumes and reach out to family on social media to find further help when they would normally not have the access to it.
“We are going to start changing this community,” said Hayes. “That is the goal. To really have an impact. To be looked at as a beacon in the community for helping families and individuals experiencing homelessness.”
ACCESS Housing has a variety of volunteer needs. They need help with everything from accounting, to event planning and property maintenance to help keep the community and organization thriving.
“I think I’m the lucky one that gets to watch families through this incredible transition,” said Vizina. “This is the kind of place that’s truly making a difference in the world.”
