RR Donnelley to Shutter Greeley Plant

US Unemployment Offices

More than 170 workers will soon be out of a job at a Northern Colorado printing plant.

RR Donnelley announced this week plans to shutter its plant in southeast Greeley, closing its doors for good in the next 60 days. The company said the action was its “only option” to remain a leader in the “highly competitive commercial printing industry.”

The announcement is a blow to the city of Greeley, which right now has an 11.5% unemployment rate, significantly higher than the state’s 8.8%.

One bit of good but mixed news is plans by Leprino Foods to open its Greeley plant. This week more than 1,000 people showed up for meetings about new job openings. But the company says it plans to hire only 77 people this year, adding that the factory won’t be fully operational until 2013 at the earliest.
