Sens. Udall, Bennet Call for Moratorium on USPS Closures

Creative Commons

Colorado Democratic Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall today called for a 6-month moratorium on recent proposed closures by the U.S. Postal Service so Congress can establish more “comprehensive” reform.

This year has produced a rolling list of dramatic reform efforts for the financially troubled USPS. Earlier this summer, the agency announced it would study whether to close 3,700 mainly rural post offices. This week, the agency announced plans to change First Class Mail delivery, and closure of about 250 USPS processing facilities.

In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senators Udall and Bennet said the USPS should put its reform efforts on hold and give Congress the opportunity to reform the postal service in a way that “protects universal service” while “ensuring financial viability” for the agency.

Eighteen other senators signed on to the letter, which asks for the moratorium to be included in the next appropriations bill.
