Weekend Audition: Soul, Blues, and Uke-infused Folk

Truth And Soul Records

The sounds of the weekend. As today brings the Greeley Blues Jam to town, step inside for a soulful song from Lee Fields, some Blues from the 2011 Jam, and some live Danielle Ate The Sandwich.

People first became aware of the music of Lee Fields via his first single, "Bewildered" b/w "Tell Her I Love Her," but never really hit it big nationally. Lucky for funk fans, he persevered and re emerged in the 90's, touring in the southern soul and blues circuit. At that time, Fields recorded with Desco Records, which Steve Huey of the All-Music Guide describes as "a trailblazing label devoted to releasing new material designed to appeal to old-school funk collectors." Desco finally morphed into the musician owned and run Daptone Records.

In 2004, Jeff Silverman and Leon Michaels formed Truth & Soul Records and contacted Fields to record with their house band, The Expressions, starting this new and exciting musical chapter in Lee Field's life.

Downtown Greeley is blues-infused all day Saturday because it is once again time for the Greeley Blues Jam. The sod is laid at Island Grove Arena, a fragrant carpet upon which hundreds of fans can enjoy great Blues from Jimmie Vaughn, The Soul Rebels, The Otis Taylor Band, and so much more (all the while savoring great food and libations).

It wouldn't be the same without you.

One of Colorado's true sweethearts, Danielle Anderson, aka Danielle Ate the Sandwich is back with a new record to share: Like A King. She will be performing Sunday, June 10th at the Bluebird Theater with Chris Daniels (solo) and Ian Cooke before heading east on tour.

Here is a great video of a performance at Denver's seminal record store, Twist & Shout: Danielle Ate the Sandwich, "Indiana"

Have a great weekend!

Though the majority of my radio experience has been in the commercial sector (from Colorado to Utah to Alaska), my radio was always tuned to the public station... I am an NPR junkie. I was blessed to work with some truly amazing and creative people in radio since my first professional job in the industry during my freshman year in college. That blessing has continued by being part of the family of one of the most incredible radio stations (and staff) in the country - KUNC.
