Welcome To Michael de Yoanna, KUNC's New Director Of News Content

Welcome to Michael de Yoanna, KUNC’s first director of news content. Michael is a long-time Colorado journalist who has won numerous awards for investigative and news reporting. Michael will join us March 7, providing leadership in designing and implementing a news and information strategy for KUNC's community and the station's media partners.

Prior to joining KUNC, Michael was a reporter and producer for Colorado Public Radio, and partnered with NPR's investigative unit to report on struggling soldiers discharged without benefits despite their injuries in war. Previously, he was an investigative producer at Channel 7 in Denver. Michael has also reported for newspapers along the Front Range, including the Fort Collins Coloradoan and the Colorado Springs Independent.

His work has been featured in The New York Times, Salon, The Washington Times, 5280 Magazine, and CBS's 48 Hours Mystery among others. He has also worked as a consultant for 60 Minutes.

Michael shared a national Edward R. Murrow award as a freelance reporter at KUNC for "The Burden of Proof: One Colorado Soldier's Fight for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosis."

That award makes joining KUNC a kind of homecoming, de Yoanna said.

"It an incredible opportunity to lead KUNC News at this exciting time in the station's history," de Yoanna said. "I'm proud to join the talented journalists at KUNC in creating a beacon in the community -- a 24/7 news service for our diverse, and growing, Northern Colorado audience. I will build upon KUNC's long tradition of excellent storytelling and investigations. We're going to build trust in the community. We're going to dig for the stories that matter. We're going to tell them with verve and style. We're going to innovate and excite."

In 2015, Michael de Yoanna released, Recovering, an independent documentary film that he directed about veterans healing the wounds of war through bicycling.

As Director of Community Engagement for KUNC & The Colorado Sound, I look for ways to bring the programs and personalities you hear on the radio “out of the box” to engage and interact in live settings.
