Colorado Edition: Functional, Fashionable, Controversial

Leigh Paterson / KUNC

Today on Colorado Edition: we’ll learn about federal relief funding for Colorado’s schools, and speak with the president of the University of Northern Colorado about the school year ahead. We will also learn about the history of pandemic fashion, and get some tips for how to start your very own victory garden.

CARES Act And Colorado Schools

The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, has provided $173 million in total for both public and private schools in our state. But in the world of higher education, some leaders are saying that some of the neediest students are being left behind in receiving the help they need.

Jason Gonzales, who reports on higher education for Chalkbeat Colorado, joined us to talk about how schools are dispersing federal aid to students.

COVID-19’s Impacts On The University of Northern Colorado

The University of Northern Colorado is one of the schools that applied for aid through the CARES Act. Last Friday, university president Andy Feinstein announced they were receiving close to $4 million. That money will go to students in the form of emergency grants. President Feinstein joined us to discuss the funding, and what’s ahead for the university.

Pandemic Fashion

During the COVID-19 pandemic, masks are having a bit of a moment. They’ve gone from functional to fashionable to controversial, all in the span of two months. KUNC reporter Stacy Nick looks at the history of fashion during times of epidemics to see where they’ve been and where they’re going.

Planting Your Own Victory Garden

Now that Mother’s Day has come and gone, and the weather is warming, many of you may be heading out to your gardens. And, some of you may also be planting your very own victory garden. Katie Dunker, the statewide coordinator for the Colorado Master Gardener Program at Colorado state University Extension, joined us with some gardening tips, and to discuss the university’s modern day victory garden project, Grow and Give.
