Volunteer firefighters protect about half of Colorado’s residents, with solely volunteer departments being responsible for about 70 percent of the state’s land surface.

And they are significantly understaffed.

Fort Collins and the rest of the Front Range are no strangers to ranking high in economic development. A new survey places the city as the second highest in the nation when it comes to hiring new workers. Colorado Springs also received high rankings, but Denver’s reputation is faltering.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office released a report looking at the response to the Black Forest Fire Tuesday, nearly one year to the day after the devastating fire began.

While it may seem that traffic congestion across Colorado is getting worse, a report released Wednesday by the Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG) says across the state’s largest urban areas; residents actually reduced their driving miles, decreased commutes by car, and increased their use of public transport and bicycles.
