RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

And our last word in business is a dud, dude. The international surfing competition in Northern California is all but off. Organizers of the Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Surf Invitational say the weather pattern of La Nina isn't making enough waves. Last year, a very different weather pattern, El Nino, provided huge waves for the contest in the city of Half Moon Bay just below San Francisco. If there's no competition this year, the $150,000 winner's prize gets washed away. But the calm waters are good for fishing.

And that's the business news on MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Renee Montagne. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
