Vatican Cracks Down On Rome Monastery

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

The Vatican has shut down a monastery within one of Rome's oldest churches. Santa Croce is known these days for a more contemporary style of worship. Like a nun who was once a lap dancer performing a suggestive "Holy Dance." And the abbot who brought flash to the basilica has been described as a flamboyant former fashion designer. A fresh take on devotion perhaps, but the Vatican has found evidence of, quote, "liturgical and financial irregularities."
