MARY LOUISE KELLY, host:

As FBI officials learn to tread carefully, so do teachers talking about terrorism in class. In New Jersey, a new, optional curriculum has been designed to help. It's called "Learning from the Challenges of Our Times: Global Security, Terrorism and 9/11 in the Classroom." Relatives of 9/11 victims helped write the lessons.

INSKEEP: Elementary students learn about trees as symbols of remembrance. Middle-schoolers pick apart the Patriot Act. And high school students ask each other who is a terrorist. New Jersey teachers can use the new lessons this fall. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
