STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep with congratulations to Bertie McConnell. Back in 1941, she attended rush parties for Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Then World War II intervened. She left college to work at an ammunition plant. Decades later, her daughter was a teacher at the same college and shared her mother's story in class. Members of the sorority responded by inviting Bertie McConnell to become a pledge at age 90. It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
