This week marks the six-month anniversary of the High Park Fire, which burned more than 87,000 acres and destroyed 259 homes west of Fort Collins during the most destructive and expensive wildfire season in Colorado history.
Tuesday the Board of Larimer County Commissioners is honoring those who worked – and are still working – on behalf of survivors of the High Park Fire and the Woodland Heights Fire that sparked this summer in Estes Park.
“We feel strongly there’s a lot of gratitude for the community support around the fire,” says Larimer County Recovery Manager Suzanne Bassinger.
Today’s event takes place at The Ranch in Loveland. A special commemorative medallion will be given out as a keepsake, with artwork partly designed by a firefighter with the Poudre Fire District.
Bassinger says the organizations and people being honored include the Red Cross, NoCo Rebuilds, Timberline Church, those who operated the Disaster Recovery Center, and the cities of Fort Collins, Greeley and Estes Park.
