Colorado wildfires are becoming increasingly costly and destructive. Since 2002, wildfires have destroyed roughly 2,000 structures according to federal fire data. In response to this growing risk, Colorado State University is launching a new center focused on creating wildfire management solutions “for the next generation.”
The Center for Managing WUI Wildfire Risk will provide science-based answers to critical questions raised by the most destructive wildfires in Colorado’s history.
One of the first tasks will be challenging: mapping and characterizing the WUI in Colorado. Through geographic data, socio-economic characteristics and wildfire risk potential, researchers will build a database that will shed light on Colorado’s WUI.
Colorado legislators are searching for ways to prevent future wildfires and protect homes in the WUI. In September, the Wildfire Insurance and Forest Health Task Force unveiled several recommendations to Gov. John Hickenlooper.
According to the Center’s web page, it will hold a stakeholder engagement meeting this fall to initiate partnerships and prioritize wildfire issues.
