Photo: Bob Bowen Memorial Concert

A Blog Supreme is out of the office today. Until our return, we are leaving you with some photographs from The NPR Jazz Photography Pool, like the one below. Photographer (and bassist) writes:

Bassist Bob Bowen left us this fall when he was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident while biking in New York City. Bob was the kind of guy I always wished I was: encouraging, supportive, always welcoming and thoughtful.

His family, friends, and fans gathered for a deeply moving memorial extravaganza on Sept. 27, 2010 at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn. There were many memorable performances and speeches, but when six of his bass playing colleagues took the floor it was an undeniably powerful statement. Bob loved other bass players, and loved to be around them. Here, his brothers of the bass gather to pay tribute to that love. The sounds were as textured and toneful as the wood grain of their instruments, and harmonized well with the aged walls and floor of the hall. Appropriately, this was shot on film. Totally analog.

Here's the original, and a link to Reuben Radding's Flickr photostream. Feel free to contribute your jazz shots to the NPR Jazz Flickr group.
