Woman Who Inspired WWII 'Rosie' Poster Dies At 86

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

We bid farewell, this morning, to an unwitting feminist hero, thought to be the model for an iconic poster from World War Two. The poster showed a woman in a red bandana, flexing her bicep. It wasn't until the '80s, after feminists made the poster famous, that Geraldine Doyle recognized her face. In 1942, a photographer had come to the metal factory where Doyle was working. This week, she passed away at 86.
