Unemployment levels continue to surge as 6.6 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week after losing their jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. More than 17 million new jobless claims have been filed in the past four weeks.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s leading expert on infectious diseases and a key member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, says physical separation and other restrictions are sharply reducing projections of the death toll from the respiratory virus. The final toll, he says, currently “looks more like 60,000 than the 100,000 to 200,000” that U.S. officials previously estimated.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders ended his campaign for the presidency, leaving former Vice President Joe Biden as the sole choice for the Democratic nomination.
