“Strange Fruit.” “Fortunate Son.” “What’s Going On.” Protest songs are part of the American story.
Examples include the “freedom songs” of the ’50s and the anti-war folk music of the ’60s and ’70s.
Music is also part of the current demonstrations against police brutality and racism. The songs of Kendrick Lamar and Pop Smoke are common protest anthems.
