The avalanche danger is elevated in western Colorado because of fresh, heavy snow and strong winds.
The risk is highest Monday in the backcountry areas near Steamboat Springs, Gunnison, Aspen and Grand Mesa. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says travel isn't recommended in or below avalanche terrain in those regions.
The risk is ranked as considerable in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, where a skier died in an avalanche on Saturday.
The Durango Herald identified him as 40-year-old Peter Marshall of Longmont.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says the fatal avalanche happened northwest of Red Mountain Pass.
