NASA Picks The Space Shuttles' New Homes

NASA just announced that when they're all formally retired:

-- Space shuttle Atlantis will go to the in Florida.

-- The in Los Angeles will be the new home for space shuttle Endeavour.

-- The Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., (just outside Washington, D.C.) will get Discovery.

-- New York City's will be the home for the prototype shuttle, Enterprise.

As Korva reported earlier, there were many places competing.

As The Associated Press reminds us, "only two shuttle missions remain, both to the space station. Endeavour is due to blast off April 29, and Atlantis on June 28. Discovery, the oldest surviving shuttle, ended its flying career last month."

Two space shuttles and the astronauts aboard were lost during missions — Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003. Both shuttles carried seven-member crews.
