New St. Anthony Hospital Opens Without Obstetrics Program

Creative Commons

The long anticipated St. Anthony hospital held its grand opening in Lakewood on Monday. It’s taken seven years to plan and build the 450 million dollar facility, which includes everything from level one trauma care, oncology, orthopedics, and an expanded emergency room. But there’s one major service that won’t be offered – labor and delivery.

And as Bente Birkeland reports, getting out of the baby business is a decision that more and more hospitals are making across the country.

Bente Birkeland is an award-winning journalist who joined Colorado Public Radio in August 2018 after a decade of reporting on the Colorado state capitol for the Rocky Mountain Community Radio collaborative and KUNC. In 2017, Bente was named Colorado Journalist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), and she was awarded with a National Investigative Reporting Award by SPJ a year later.
