Can You Mix ‘Spinal Tap’ With Lucha Libre? Metalachi Can

Courtesy of Yard Dart Entertainment
Metalachi melds heavy metal with mariachi.

Sometimes you want your music live, loud and local. Sometimes you want a Latin spectacle that merges Spinal Tap with Lucha Libre. This weekend - you can have both.

The Westword Music Showcase returns to celebrate national acts including DJ Dillon Francis, Cold War Kids and Matt and Kim, as well as local artists like Wheelchair Sports Camp, Gasoline Lollipops and Brent Cowles.

The event began in 1995 and originally focused on local acts only, although that first year did include an early performance by a then-unknown The Apples in Stereo (who at the time went by The Apples).

Westword Music Showcase, noon to 10 p.m. June 25, 2016, various locations in Denver’s Golden Triangle neighborhood. $45-$95

Part art, part engineering, all fun. The Longmont Kinetics Sculpture Race is a testament to the power of, well, human-powered crafts. Creativity counts big time in this race across Union Reservoir. You never know what to expect, but past sculptures range from mechanical sharks to pedal-powered flying saucers. That’s the kind of creative mayhem you’ll be in for.

Longmont Kinetics Sculpture Race and Summer Solst-ish Happening, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 25, 2016, Union Reservoir. $10 per carload; $2 bike/walk-in

While it’s unproven whether Metalachi’s claim to be the “first and only” metal/mariachi group is true, it is easily confirmable that they are coming to Greeley. It’s also pretty easy to say that a band that covers heavy metal hits with mariachi instrumentation (and a stage show straight out of Cheech and Chong) is one you have to see to believe. Lest you think these guys are all gimmick, check out the video below of their cover of Metallica's 'Master of Puppets.' That's some serious violin there.

Metalachi, 8 p.m. June 24, 2016, Moxi Theater, Greeley. $12-$15.
