Fort Collins filmmakers BlueShoe Media will showcase their feature film 'Beyond Karma' Sept. 7 at the festival.

While the inaugural Horsetooth International Film Festival features movies from around the world, its real focus is on local films and filmmakers.

Northern Colorado already has the talent, says festival co-founder Jesse Nyander. Now they just need to get the word out.

“We want this place to become a place that people think of whenever they’re making films,” he said. “Just like they think of breweries, just as they think of for music. We could do that with film.”

While people still automatically think of places like Hollywood and New York as film hotspots, Nyander says Georgia and New Mexico are becoming serious contenders. Something few thought would be possible a decade ago.

The Horsetooth International Film Festival debuts September 6.

“Not that we necessarily need to be this massive film hub that brings in a bunch of big-time people,” Nyander said. “I just think that we have enough people here that … we could start a new Austin. We could start a new Park City. We could start a new Hollywood.”

The three-day film festival kicks off Sept. 6 with a black-tie event showcasing dome films at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. There will also be a screening of short films along with the feature “Beyond Karma” Sept. 7 at the Rialto Theater, and Sept. 8 will highlight music videos along with the closing ceremony at The Lyric.
