KUNC's Colorado Edition: Talkin' Trash, Playin' Piano, Hostin' Olympics

This week on KUNC's Colorado Edition, we talk trash. As in, about the trash that's filling up the Larimer County Landfill. We also talk about pianos hitting the streets in Fort Collins and the Winter Games potentially hitting Colorado.

First, the legislative session wrapped up this week. Statehouse reporter Bente Birkeland broke the news of sexual harassment at the Capital last November, and it's haunted the whole session. One lawmaker was expelled from office, but some feel Colorado's leaders aren't doing enough to make the Capitol a safer and more professional workplace.

Journalists from The Denver Post joined reporters from papers across the country this week in New York City to protest their owner, Alden Global Capital. As they tell Matt Bloom, they're demanding the hedge fund invest more money into the paper's dwindling newsroom — or sell it to someone who will.

Then, a question floating around the Colorado zeitgeist: Should Colorado host a Winter Games? A committee created by the mayor of Denver is weighing that question right now. As Michael de Yoanna reports, the price tag — up to $2 billion — is only one of the concerns people have.

We check out another thing floating through the summer air: the sound of tinkling pianos. Over the next few weeks, about 20 upright pianos will be set out in locations around Fort Collins for anyone to play. Arts reporter Stacy Nick talked with Kyra Buckley to find out more about this unique program.

In his weekly film review, KUNC critic Howie Movshovtiz, who teaches film and television at CU Denver, issues a verdict on RGB, the new documentary about the life of cultural icon and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Then, we dive into the Larimer County Landfill for a look at what officials are planning to do when the landfill reaches capacity in about 6 years. As KUNC's Matt Bloom reports, that's almost no time at all in the waste management world.

Finally, from Rae Ellen Bichell, we hear a little about the decision of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to part ways with the Boy Scouts of America.
