Floodwaters In Greeley Starting To Drop, Leaving Damage Behind

Weld County Office of Emergency Management
The Varra Gravel Pit in east Greeley, which was breached by the Poudre River Saturday, May 31, 2014.

High water continues to move through Greeley, although Greeley officials say current river levels have dropped slightly since Tuesday afternoon. Several roads in and around Greeley remain closed, and all voluntary evacuation notices remain in effect.

The Greeley Tribune reported flooding in homes and businesses in northeast Greeley as the Poudre River remained above flood stage throughout the day Monday. With so much water needing to flow back into the Poudre River, it could take several days – or even a week – for the flood waters to recede.

Building inspectors with the City of Greeley have conducted initial damage assessments and reported 11 damaged private residences and 12 damaged businesses. Of those, five homes and five businesses were found to have major damage.

The city is updating road closures and other flood information on their website here.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
