Oprah Winfrey arrives at a party in Pasadena, Calif. on Jan 6.

The amazing tale that is Oprah Winfrey's life took another unexpected turn Monday when the media mogul and cultural touchstone introduced her TV audience to the half-sister she never knew she had.

Winfrey said she only met her half-sister Patricia on Thanksgiving Day last year. Patricia had apparently known that the two were related since 2007 and made a number of private attempts to get in touch with Winfrey.

Winfrey said that DNA tests confirm that she and Patricia share the same mother, Vernita Lee. Patricia was born to Lee and given up for adoption in 1963. Winfrey was 8 at the time and living with her father.

On Monday's show, Winfrey called the revelation of Patricia's existence "the miracle of miracles" and marveled at how her sister "never once thought to sell the story."

If you can't wait to see today's show on TV, TMZ has video from the show on its website.

USA Today has a full write up on the news and observes that the two have similar features:

Patricia is several inches shorter than Winfrey, but the half-sisters are similar in appearance, with round faces and the same smile.
