Colorado teens looking for jobs will see a tough job market this year, but initial numbers released by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas are showing a positive start. Employment of 16- to 19-year olds grew by 71,000 in May nationwide, a “vast improvement” from the previous year.
The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment will release statewide teen employment numbers later this summer. But Bill Thoennes, spokesperson for Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, says he’s expecting 2011 to be similar to last year.
“Last year in 2010, for every four teens looking for a summer job, one was unsuccessful,” said Thoennes. “We suspect that it’s going to be about that this summer as well.”
In 2010, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment offered job counseling services to more than 40,000 teens statewide.
