Boulder is known for innovative companies, cool startups and an outdoor loving atmosphere, but that doesn't seem to keep people who work there happy.

The list of the happiest and unhappiest cities compiled by CareerBliss.com reflected 36,000 employee reviews between November 2011 and November 2012. The survey was posted on Forbes.com.

Employees evaluated factors that are commonly thought to affect workplace happiness, such as their relationship with bosses and co-workers, their work environment and the amount of control they have over their work.

Top five "unhappiest" places to work

  1. Boulder, Colo.
  2. Reno, Nev.
  3. Wichita, Kan.
  4. Fresno, Calif.
  5. Little Rock, Ark.

Boulder scored an overall 3.45 on the scale. Boulder workers were most unhappy with their growth opportunities and their compensation. The happiest city in the U.S., Dayton Ohio, scored a 4.02 overall.
