Gov. Polis Says Sheriffs Have Discretion To Set Priorities

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis says he believes state's sheriffs are committed to following the laws passed at the Capitol but also says they have discretion to decide which issues to focus on.

Polis declined to say Tuesday whether he would do anything to enforce a proposed law to temporarily seize weapons from people deemed a risk if some sheriffs follow through on vows not to help carry it out.

Attorney General Phil Weiser has said sheriffs who don't want to enforce the so-called red flag measure should resign.

Polis said he is confident that keeping people safe would include using the court process laid out by bill, which has been advancing through the Legislature.

He also said he encourages the bill's backers to work with law enforcement to address their concerns.
