Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold speaks to the state’s nine Democratic presidential electors before they cast votes for Joe Biden at the state Capitol on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, in downtown Denver.

A top legal advisor to President Donald Trump testified at a hearing called by Republican state lawmakers to look into any irregularities concerning Colorado’s mail-in voting system.

The state has been praised by both major parties as among the nation’s safest voting systems and for the state's largest turnouts in the U.S. in 2020.

The reason for and timing of Tuesday's Legislative Audit Committee hearing befuddled many, coming a day after the Electoral College certified Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Republican committee chair Rep. Lori Saine of Weld County told fellow lawmakers its goal was to put to rest “any doubt” about election irregularities in the state.
