Colorado Edition: Mixed Messages

Scott Franz/Capitol Coverage

Today on Colorado Edition: we’ll learn about how the coronavirus pandemic has changed campaigns, and what impact it’s had on state politics. Plus, we’ll talk with a local business owner, hear about how the pandemic has impacted migrant farmworkers, and talk to a scientist who recently discovered an ancient mammal.

Campaigning During Coronavirus

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we work, go to school and socialize. It’s also creating unprecedented challenges for political candidates who use small and large gatherings to drum up support for their campaigns. KUNC’s Scott Franz gives us a look at how Democrats are reacting in Colorado’s U.S. Senate race.

How State Lawmakers, And Legislation, Have Been Impacted

Scott Franz also joined us to talk about the work ahead for state lawmakers, who are embarking on a grim task this month of deciding which government programs will be cut because of the economic devastation from the coronavirus.

Dog Grooming During A Pandemic

Under the state’s new safer-at-home order, one type of business that has been allowed to re-open is dog groomers. We talked with a local business owner, Diana Phillips from Le Clipperie Dog Grooming in Greeley, about what re-opening looks like for her.

Migrant Farmworkers

Coronavirus has caused a lot of uncertainty for Colorado farmers. But what about their workers? Migrant farmworkers are expected to start coming to the state in droves. And as KUNC’s Adam Rayes reports, there are still unanswered questions about their health and safety.

An Ancient Discovery

Dr. David Krause is part of a team that recently published a paper on the new discovery of a 66-million-year-old mammal in Madagascar. David Krause lives here in Colorado, and is senior curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. He joined us to describe the newfound animal.
