Colorado Edition: Rampage

Scott Franz/Capitol Coverage
The Colorado Senate debates bills in February

Today on Colorado Edition: we’ll look at the debate in the state Capitol around paid family leave. Plus, what happened on the day of the “Killdozer” rampage in Granby. We’ll also hear about the debate around oil and gas regulations in Larimer County, and explore a new CBD facility in Greeley.

Paid Family Leave

Democrats are unveiling legislation this week to create a statewide paid family leave program. It would give workers time to care for a sick relative or newborn. A similar plan did not make it out of the legislature last year. KUNC’s Scott Franz has more on changes to the new bill and its likelihood of passing.

Remembering The “Killdozer”

In June of 2004, Marvin Heemeyer used a bulldozer to conduct a rampage in Granby, Colorado. He damaged many buildings, and ended up dead. The incident is known as the “Killdozer rampage.”

A new documentary out this week, called Tread, explores the history of the event.

Patrick Brower joined us with more about that day. He is a Granby resident and the author of Killdozer: The True Story of the Colorado Bulldozer Rampage, and his interviews with local residents served as the basis of the documentary.

You can find more information about local screenings of the film here

Oil And Gas Regulations

Larimer County is working to put in place oil and gas regulations. This evening, the planning commission is holding a public hearing on proposed regulations. Matt Lafferty is the principal planner for the county. He joined us with a preview of the debate.

We also spoke with Sonia Koetting from the Larimer Alliance for Health Safety and Environment about the group's concerns about the regulations.

CBD In Greeley

The CBD industry is fast growing in our state, even in areas that don’t allow the sale of marijuana.

Greeley is one example of a city that has embraced hemp, despite its lack of support for marijuana. And a new CBD production facility will open in the city soon.

Lucas High from BizWest joined us with more about the plant and the industry in our state.
