Colorado Edition: The Road Ahead

Scott Franz
/
KUNC

Today on Colorado Edition: We look at how the coronavirus is widening the gap between communities with broadband, and those without. We also check in on Colorado’s senate race, with a look at last weekend’s party assemblies and a look at campaign finances. And, we learn more about a program helping mountain communities by investing in business and residents there.

Colorado Party Assemblies

COVID-19 is defining 2020 so far, but we’re still in an election year here in the U.S. In Colorado, a senate seat is up for grabs and the state’s parties held political primaries over the weekend. To break down the happenings, we spoke to John Frank, a politics reporter with the Colorado Sun. You can find his reporting on the assemblies here.

Campaign Finances In Colorado’s Senate Race

Campaign finance reports were just due for the first quarter of the year, so we spoke to Kyle Saunders, a professor of political science at Colorado State University, about how the money is shaping up for the 2020 senate race.

Broadband: A Story Of The Haves And The Have-Nots

Last summer, we went to southwestern Colorado to report on the effort to bring high speed internet to the state’s most remote communities. Some got connected before the coronavirus pandemic hit. But others weren’t as fortunate. As KUNC’s Scott Franz reports, the divide between them is widenling when we’ve all been told to both stay – and work – from home.

Colorado Mountain College To Help Mountain Communities

COVID-19 has hit Colorado’s mountain communities especially hard. An analysis by the KUNC newsroom found Eagle and Gunnison counties have the highest positive tested cases per capita in the state. Pitkin and Summit counties also have experienced a high amount of cases. KUNC’s Stephanie Daniel joined us to discuss a new program that is responding to the coronavirus pandemic by investing in the residents and businesses in these communities.
