Nepal

  • Few can say they've reached the summit of Mt. Everest. Even fewer can say they've done it twice. And only one woman can say she's done it twice in one month.
  • The name is pretty grisly. But these annual or semi-annual festivals, which involve yak blood and take place high in the mist-wrapped highlands of Nepal, reflect the complex relationship that Buddhists have with eating meat.
  • Nineteen climbers died in a Nepalese plane crash today, following last Sunday's avalanche that killed nine people. There've been several deadly plane crashes in Nepal in the past 10 years, increasing risk for people trekking in the mountainous country.
  • Last August, the U.S. government suspended adoptions from Nepal because it was concerned about fraud in Nepal's adoption system. The change left 66 American families in limbo. Since then, all but one of the families have been granted visas for their adopted Nepali children. But now some question: Where is the fraud?
  • The small country of Nepal stretches from Mt. Everest in the north to the Indian border in the south. Nepal's musical traditions reflect its geography, from Himalayan folk tunes to Indian ragas. Reese Erlich reports from Kathmandu that Nepali musicians are now fusing that traditional music with jazz and rock.
