This week, Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton is opening the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in her hometown of Bentonville, Ark. But some are having trouble separating the retail giant, which is also headquartered in Bentonville, from the cultural attraction.

Earlier this year the South African government approved Walmart's takeover of Massmart, the region's largest retail chain. Now that ruling faces an appeal. Massmart gets roughly 90 percent of its products from South Africa, but opponents say Walmart's business model means that likely won't continue.

The company said the resignation was personal, but it comes just after China arrested Walmart employees and forced it to shut down stores for allegedly mislabeling regular pork as organic.

One customer was nabbed by police for sampling raw meat in a Pennsylvania store. A family of five was living in a car at a Walmart in Florida. And at a store in Missouri, a girl had a run-in with a monkey. At any given moment, there are 850,000 Americans inside a Walmart store. Something weird is bound to happen.

"We're seeing cost increases starting to come through at a pretty rapid rate," Bill Simon tells USA Today. Some will be passed along to consumers, he says.
