Cities, College Campuses Brace for Back-to-School Traffic

Thousands of students are pouring back onto college campuses in Greeley, Fort Collins and Boulder this week as they prepare for the start of the fall semester. On many public university campuses, residence halls open today, with classes starting on Monday.

The population influx happens overnight, and can overwhelm traffic in college towns like Boulder, Greeley and Fort Collins. CSU spokesperson Brad Bohlander says students returning to the Northern Colorado campus will see a lot of construction this year.

“One of our main throughways will be closed due to ongoing construction,” he says. “But much of it happened over the summer—especially regarding residence halls.”

Meantime, retailers offering coupons and back-to-school savings are attracting students of all ages to stores.

Bohlander says on the Fort Collins campus, officials have partnered with a retailer to bus first-time college students to the store for after-hours shopping—a move that aims to ease some of the traffic this weekend.
