The Scene At Denver Comic Con

Denver’s Colorado Convention Center became the center of the state’s comic universe as thousands attended the inaugural Denver Comic Con this past weekend.

Some even dressed as their favorite characters, many from both sides of the geek divide: Star Wars and Star Trek. Superheroes, cult movie characters and video game characters were also lurking the halls, including zombie hunters from the Resident Evil series.

The Denver Post reports the inaugural event could be one of the largest openings in Comicon history.

Officials hosting the first Denver Comic Con at the Colorado Convention Center anticipated the event would be the second-largest comic-con opening ever.

"The fire marshals are here now because we are almost at capacity," said Charlie La Greca, co-founder of the event.

That was at 1 p.m., Saturday, when the crowd was around 9,000 people occupying the 100,000 square feet of the center devoted to the event.

Along with throngs of event goers buying and selling everything from comic books to gaming tables, a who’s who of the sci-fi and comic book world made appearances including Kristin Bauer of True Blood fame, and  Billy West, the voice of Philip J. Fry from Futurama.

Organizers say they’re already planning Denver Comic Con 2013 and have set up a Facebook page to promote the event.
