Vestas Announces Brighton Facility Layoffs

Vestas

More Colorado layoffs have been announced by wind turbine maker Vestas. 30 jobs will be cut at its facility in Brighton.

Vestas says the layoffs, and workforce cuts in Pueblo earlier this month, are largely due to uncertainty in the wind market. That uncertainty is driven by fears that congress will not extend a federal tax credit that lowers the cost of installing wind systems. That production tax credit is set to expire at the end of the year.

Spokesman Andrew Longeteig says Vestas is not planning on leaving Colorado.

“We remain committed to manufacturing wind turbine components in its Colorado factories to meet the needs of its U.S. customers. And will also continue to export turbine components from its U.S. factories to its customers in Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America” said Longeteig.

Steve Lynn, a reporter with the Northern Colorado Business Report broke the story earlier today. He says more cuts are possible after 2nd quarter earnings figures are released tomorrow.

“Vestas says it’s going to continue to scale its business up or down depending on its needs and market demand” said Lynn. You can read more from Steve Lynn on the Vestas layoffs at Northern Colorado Business Report.
