Benjamin McPhail

Program Director, 105.5 The Colorado Sound

I’ve been with The Colorado Sound from the very beginning, helping to shape the music, image and overall presentation of what I consider the finest radio station in the country. As a certifiable music fanatic, it is pure joy to come to the station and share this passion with a staff of likeminded radio professionals and display our knowledge and love of music with you every day.

I have been involved with radio since 1989 and done every radio job under the sun: overnights, mornings, middays, afternoon drive and evenings. I have been program director, music director, production director, promotion director — and yes, even sales and (when needed) engineering. Phew.

I have helped the Colorado Sound be named Westword Newspaper’s Best New Radio Station in 2017. That same year, I was named Program Director of the Year by FMQB trade magazine. I have served on NPR Music's Slingshot Editorial Committee and a regular contributor to NPR Music's Heavy Rotation series.

I live in Denver with my beautiful wife and adventurous dog. I love cycling, yoga and college athletics. I am a proud alumnus of the University of Colorado. Go Buffs.

Judy Garland singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas?" Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song?" How about Bing Crosby's "White Christmas?"

Yawn. If you needs something fresh, try these Christmas (soon-to-be) classics on for size.

Hard Working Americans are a super group with a diverse background, consisting of Todd Snider, Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Neal Casal from the Chris Robinson brotherhood, Chad Staehly from Great American Taxi, Duane Trucks and Jesse Aycock of Jars of Clay and Garth Brooks.

The band lives up to its name - they've been on the road since they formed.

Red Rocks concert season is quickly approaching. The biggest challenge as always is choosing what show to see. Here are our picks.

The London Evening Standard anointed Matthew Houck as “the most significant American in his field since Kurt Cobain.” As the driving force behind Phosphorescent, there’s no pressure there, right?

A longtime successful solo artist, Mike Doughty’s past as the frontman of 90’s alt band Soul Coughing has always loomed in the background. Now on his own label, Doughty has revisited several songs of his past.

Former lead of 90s avante-garde rockers Soul Coughing, Mike Doughty has a quick wit, a dry sense of humor and a great knack for writing some very catchy songs.

TV on the Radio is a band that is a little hard to describe. They have elements of electronic, post-punk and some very atmospheric sound.

The Newport Folk Festival opened Friday with killer sets from Old Crow Medicine Show, JD McPherson, and more. The rest of the weekend expands on that promise.

In a word, the lineup for the Newport Folks Fest is spectacular. KUNC & NPR Music are streaming the fest live all weekend.

You can sum up The Civil Wars' vision by saying “They are about the good, the bad, and the ugly of relationships.”
